Extracting vanadium from ore is the most important task in fervanadium production. Vanadium ore sources vary in composition and characteristics, but they typically contain vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) as the primary vanadium-containing mineral. Common sources include titanium-bearing magnetite, vanadium-bearing titanium magnetite, and karotite. The ores undergo a series of processes to extract the vanadium, including crushing, grinding and beneficiation to increase the concentration of vanadium. The concentrate is then roasted, leached, and precipitated to obtain vanadium pentoxide, which is further processed to produce ferrovanadium.
Vanadium mineral resources are distributed around the world, with famous mineral deposits located in countries such as China, Russia, South Africa and Brazil. Each source has its own unique characteristics, including ore grade, mineralogy and impurities. Titanium magnetite deposits are abundant and widely distributed, especially in China and Russia, and are an important source of vanadium. Vanadium-containing titanium magnetite is mainly produced in South Africa and Russia, while potashite deposits are mainly produced in the United States and Australia, in which vanadium exists in the form of uranium-vanadium oxide.
Ferovanadium production is geographically concentrated, with China being the major producer and accounting for a large share of global production. China's abundant vanadium reserves and well-established mining and processing infrastructure give it a leading position in fervanadium production. Russia and South Africa also have significant production capacity using their vast vanadium resources. Other countries such as Brazil, Australia and Canada contribute to global production, but on a relatively small scale.
